Efforts on to exploit maritime wealth’

ENC hosts meet on behalf of National Maritime Foundation, an NGO think-tank

‘Security being strengthened to contain piracy’

Conference to take issues concerning stakeholders into account

LOOKING AHEAD: Union Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju flanked by chairman of the National Maritime Foundation, Admiral (retired) Arun Prakash (right), and ENC Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Nirmal Verma, during an interaction with press at the Eastern Seaboard conference-2008 in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju on Friday said that keeping in view the rapid development of ports, off-shore assets and sea-borne trade, all efforts would be made for regional cooperation and exploitation of maritime wealth. India has a 7,500 km. coastline and a large exclusive zone and the changing global scenario mandated a better understanding of inter-related issues among all stakeholders both in governmental and in non-governmental agencies.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the Eastern Seaboard Conference-2008 at the Samudrika auditorium at the Eastern naval base here and also briefly interacted with media persons. The Eastern Naval Command is hosting the two-day ‘Eastern Seaboard Conference’ on behalf of the National Maritime Foundation. The NMF is a non-governmental, non-political maritime think-tank and undertakes studies and analyses of various issues in the maritime domain, with a view to formulate and present options for a vibrant and evolving national maritime policy.
‘Freak incident’

Mr. Pallam Raju had also referred to the piracy in the sea and asserted that security was being strengthened. Regional coordination, maritime security and cooperation in trade which had been expanding are essential, the Minister said. “We have been acquiring economic assets abroad and security would have to be ensured for them,” he said. Answering a question about the involvement of an army officer in Malegoan blasts, the Minister asserted that it was an isolated and freak incident. On the question of second naval base, the Minister said that efforts were on to make alternative arrangements.
Offshore work

Chairman of NMF and former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash, said that a number of ports were coming up and tremendous off-shore work had been going on. The conference would take into account issues concerning all stakeholders and there would be follow-up action. Vice-Admiral Nirmal Verma, Flag Officer, Commanding-in- Chief, delivered the key note address. The seminar was attended by a number of eminent speakers including former Ambassadors Kanwal Sibal, AN.Ram and senior officers from the Defence Services.

Media persons had a tough time covering the event. Media had not been permitted into the venue of the main event. Only cameramen were allowed to take photographs of the Minister and senior officers when they came out after the inaugural. But, the Minister, who was speaking to press persons on the verandah, wanted media persons to be allowed because it was an important event.

He also promised to interact with media just before lunch time. “You can come and cover the proceedings, if you want,” said an officer later. But the media persons who seemed hurt at the treatment meted out to them, decided not to cover further proceedings and left the place.
