Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy laid the foundation stone for Rajiv Gandhi IIIT at Nuzvid on Friday. Speaking at a public meeting, he said that the foundation would be laid at Machilipatnam Port in a month’s time. He said once, the port is ready, the coastal town would witness rapid development. He said that the six-year IIIT course would commence with 500 students from the next academic year.

He said that Rs.150 crore would be allotted for the IIIT and it would be developed with Rs.900 crore in the next five years. An admission test would be conducted for candidates who have passed Class X for admission into IIIT. He added that the works related to IIT at Medak would be started in the next year. He named the PG Centre at Nuzvid after AU Vice Chancellor MR Appa Rao and announced sanctioning of a bypass road near Nuzvid.

The Chief Minister explained about the various development programmes taken up by the Congress government including proposals for modernization of Nagarjuna Sagar Canals to provide water to tailed lands.

NUZVID: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday said the Andhra Pradesh International Institute of Information Technology (APIIIT) being set up here would have a budget of Rs. 900-crore.

He was speaking after laying foundation stone for the APIIIT here, one of the three campuses proposed under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies.

The other two Andhra Pradesh International Institute of Information Technology campuses are coming up at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district and Basar in Adilabad district.

Intake

Dr. Reddy, said these institutions would begin functioning from July 2008, with an intake of 500 students each. But when they became fully functional, they would have an intake of 2,000 students every year.

As they would be offering a six-year integrated course for students who passed SSC, each of these institutions would have a total strength of 12,000 students by 2014.

The Chief Minister said that the idea of setting up these institutions came when the Government got with much difficulty and after a long struggle an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Medak district.

“We felt the need to set up an institution like the IIT on our own, and we modelled these institutions on the lines of the successfully functioning IIIT in Hyderabad,” he observed.

Of the total budget of Rs.900 crore for the APIIIT here, Rs.150 crore would be earmarked in the next year’s budget.

Educational hub

Dr. Reddy said Nuzvid is famous as an educational hub, and hence, a decision had been taken to set up one of the three APIIITs here.

The dreams that the late Rajiv Gandhi nursed in the field of technology would be put into practice here, he remarked, and raised the slogan ‘Johar Rajiv Gandhi’ thrice.

Notification soon on IIIT admissions

HYDERABAD: The notification on selection and admission of students to IIITs under Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies will be issued in the next couple of days.

The State Government has set up three IIITs, one each at Nuzvid in Krishna district, Basara in Adilabad district and Idupulapaya in Kadapa district. The academic year for all the three institutions will commence in August this year.

The IIITs will offer a six-year integrated course for students who passed SSC. The intake will be 2,000 students each. Of the 2,000 seats in each institute, 85 percent will be reserved for local students and 15 percent for the meritorious from all States.

Principal secretary (IT&C) Sailendra Kumar Joshi told this website's newspaper that all the works were progressing as scheduled and the admission notification would be issued in a couple of days.

"For these institutions, the government had allocated Rs 3,250 crore which would be spent in a phased manner in three or fours years. At present, the faculty is being trained in Hyderabad," he stated.
