Vijayawada, also called as "Vidyalawada" (Place of Education), occupies a large amount of the educational infrastructure of Andhra Pradesh.
School Education in the city is implemented by both the government and the private firms. While the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation takes care of the former, the latter is achieved by a large number of schools, including day-care, nursery and primary-only ones.

The city was named as "The Educational Sahara" by a foreign ambassador earlier during the century.
However with the opening up of Private colleges,after the 1950s,the scene changed vastly.
The first college built in Vijayawada is the Andhra Loyola College. Andhra Loyola College was established on a 110-acre plot in the year 1953 (classes commenced on July 22, 1954) with Rev. Francis Theo Mathias, SJ, (now, Emeritus Professor, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur) as its first Principal. The college was affiliated to Andhra University till December 1976 and to Nagarjuna University thereafter. The NTR University of Health Sciences (The First Medical University in India) is located in Vijayawada, which is premier institution in the field of medical and dental sciences. The South Indian branch of the School of Architecture and Planning is planning to allocate to Vijayawada.

So, I felt City deserves a separate Thread for the Educational Development...whether it is a College, School or University to be discussed.

New varsity to start in Oct.

Vijayawada, Sept. 12: The newly-opened Krishna University would start its first academic year from October 2 with six courses, said its vice-chancellor, Prof. M.K. Durga Prasad."Our speciality is that apart from the conventional courses, we are working on introducing new subjects to tap the local employment opportunities," he said.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, Prof. Durga Prasad said that the classes and administrative activity would temporarily function from the Mutnuri Krishna Rao Bhavan of the Andhra Jateeya College at Machilipatnam. The building is being renovated to house the new university, he said.

The classes would be held for five-year integrated M.Sc Bio-Technology, three-year MCA, two-year MBA, M.Sc Pharmaceutical Chemistry, English and Literature, MA journalism and mass communication. He said that the classrooms were being designed to house a library for each room that would be under the purview of the lecturer concerned.

The students, while being in the classroom would be able to refer to the books related to the subject, he said. The students could opt for specialisation courses in M.Sc bio-technology like marine bio-technology and agri bio-technology as both would help in the development of the district, he said.

"We have designed these two specialisations after wide consultations in monitor and development board of the university to meet the needs of Krishna district which is developed both on industial and farming sectors," Prof. Durga Prasad said.

He further stated that they were hold consultations with the people of all sections to evolve new subjects and courses that would help in the overall development of the Krishna district.

"An exercise with the interaction of people has already been completed in Machilipatnam and another is scheduled to be held in Vijayawada on September 17. The Krishna Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Society will be assisting the university in holding the consultations," he said
