it is learnt from reliable source and a news column from "The Hindu" on establishment of mining university is on the cards either at Visakhapatnam or Hyderabad with a budget of Rs.400 crores. Indian institute of mines, Dhanbad has agreed to assist in setting up the same in principle and sent their positive recommendations to central government.

gainst the news TRS immediately jumped to claim to have this university at godavarikhani with a statement in news papers indicating godavarikhani has the biggest coal mine hence the demand Laughing Laughing Laughing .in their view coal is the only mineral do not even know there are so many other minerals like iron ore, manganese, bauxite and even oil/gas comes under mining catagory.

Visakhapatnam is the ideal location for this university.
tail piece: major power plants in AP are closed want of coal and vizag company PES is suppling 50000MT coal i think today to bail out these power plants. Laughing Laughing Laughing

AU stands 7th in ‘research’

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 17: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) gave 3.65 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) to the country's one of the oldest institutions —Andhra University.

The NAAC committee that visited the university in April this year assessed the performance, standards and infrastructure and submitted its report to the council. The NAAC reviewed reports of various varsities across the country on Tuesday and gave 3.65 CGPA to Andhra University. The varsity also got ‘A’ grade with 91.25 points, which is more than the earlier points – 81.6 given by NAAC in 2002.

Andhra University stood top among the six other varsities that were reviewed by the NAAC on Tuesday. Giving details about the NAAC’s report here on Wednesday, Andhra University vice-chancellor, Prof. B. Satyanarayana, said that the chairman of the NAAC’s core committee, Dr Makhopadhyaya after assessing the varsity commented that AU has the potential to get the Centre of Excellence status.

"Mr Makhopadhyaya said that AU has potential to become ‘Centre of Excellence’ and we are nearing to achieve that. We are also bringing in many reforms to make AU a top grade institution," said the VC.

On the other hand the Union government's Department of Science and Technology (DST) had reviewed the focus on research in varsities across the country and the Andhra University stood seventh in India in this aspect.

The DST would release Rs 5 crore for the next three years to encourage research activities in Andhra University. The VC also said that UGC finance committee releases its grant every year, which would be two-folds to the previous year’s grant. Whereas this year, the UGC increased it to four-folds, which would be around Rs 20 crore, due to the excellent performance by the Andhra University and the grading given by the NAAC.

AU tops NAAC assessment score

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University has received “A” grade with 3.65 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) on the 4-point scale from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

AU had received ‘A’ grade with 86.5 per cent score when NAAC assessed it last time during April 2002 and the 3.65 CGPA score of this time is equivalent to 91.25 per cent. This was announced by Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana at a press conference here on Wednesday.

The NAAC Peer Team headed by Anand Dev Mukhopadhyay visited AU campus during April and the Executive Committee of NAAC met in Bangalore on Tuesday discussed the reports on AU and other universities and granted the CGPA. The delay in announcing the decision was due to the change over of Director of NAAC (South). The EC meeting was held after a new Director took charge recently.

The numero uno

AU was top among the six universities whose grades were announced on Tuesday. Its score was better than that of Jadavpur University, Kolkota, one of the oldest and famous universities of the country. The scores of other universities were Jadavpur University, Kolkota 3.61; Bangalore University 3.12; Punjabi University, Patiala 3.11 (all A grade), University of Kalyani, West Bengal 2.67 and Devi Ahalya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore 2.57 (B grade).

Prof. Satyanarayana recalled the observation made by Prof. Mukhopadhyay after the Peer Team’s visit that AU was one of the universities having the potential to become Centre of Excellence, and expressed the confidence that the better grade from NAAC this time would enhance AU’s case.

Growing prestige

The prestige of AU was growing in the country, the Vice-Chancellor said and recalled the Rs.5 crores a year grant the Department of Science and Technology had granted for the next three years after its review of country’s institutions for their focus on research found AU as the seventh best.

The UGC’s XI Finance Commission would also provide more grant this time.
