VISAKHAPATNAM: To popularise the scenic beauty of the Thatiguda waterfalls in Anantagiri and to enhance the tourism potential of the place, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has started a new project in the valley by developing infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs.57 lakhs.
The project includes construction of a culvert and roads to the waterfall and other facilities like steps, baby pool, a watchtower, toilet block and a snacks counter in the area.
Thatiguda waterfalls is located at about two km from APTDC’s Anantagiri resorts. Located at about 110 km. from Visakhapatnam at a height of 3,100 ft above seal level, Anantagiri is fast emerging as a popular tourist spot. During the peak season between April and July, 1,38,760 people visited the valley (with Borra Caves as the bench mark) as against the figures of 1,25,460 of last year.
Primeval charm
With its primeval charm and green surroundings of the valley, the Thatiguda waterfalls is one of the USPs of the place. Right now, accessibility to the waterfall is a problem since there are no proper roads.
One has to walk over the green fields and hilly terrains to finally reach the source of gushing Gosthani waters of Thatiguda.
Towering rocks
The waterfall is surrounded by towering rocks on one side while layers of green fields are perched on the other side.
There are quite a few viewpoints from atop the hill. But the climb up the face of the rock is a bit strenuous. Once the viewpoint is constructed, it will provide a grand panoramic view of the location. Many film shootings have also taken place here right under the flowing waters of Gosthani River.
Development plan
“The plan is to develop a one-km road for vehicles and a walk way to the waterfall over the remaining stretch,” APTDC Divisional Manager P. Jeevan Prasad told The Hindu.
The work has already started and the project is expected to get over by July next year. |

VISAKHAPATNAM: With the peak tourist season fast approaching, various projects of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation have moved into top gear and are nearing completion. At APTDC’s Yatri Nivas in Vizag, additional three AC rooms and two AC suites are coming up shortly. The existing 13 rooms in the resort are being upgraded into AC rooms and lift facility will also be added.
Renovation spree
Rushikonda remained one of the favourite destinations of the tourists last season. “The occupancy rate at Rushikonda was 58 per cent between April and June this year as compared to last year’s record of 34 per cent,” APTDC Divisional Manager P. Jeevan Prasad told T he Hindu. The corporation is also renovating the existing 33 cottages at Rushikonda at the cost of Rs.1 crore. The work is expected to get over before Dasara when the tourist inflow is at its peak.
The tourist movement in Araku has been phenomenal last season, i.e. from April to July, with Borra Caves receiving 1,38,760 visitors as compared to last year’s figure of 1,25,460. In view of the rising tourist inflow, APTDC has initiated several projects at Araku Valley. The Mayuri Hill Resort at Araku is one of its latest ventures. The 65-room capacity hill resort has a multi-cuisine restaurant and a bar. Among the other projects, additional budget accommodations and luxury cottages have been developed at APTDC’s Hill Resorts at Anantagiri that offer an enchanting view of the clinging uniform patterns of greens of the valley. APTDC has also taken up a project to develop a road and other infrastructure facilities at the scenic Thatiguda Waterfalls at Anantagiri at the cost of Rs.57 lakhs.
Theme park
To offer added doses of fun and excitement for the tourists, the corporation has proposed to develop a theme park near the tribal museum at Araku.
The project will be taken up in a phased manner. In the initial phase six acres area has been earmarked for the development of various entertainment zones.
The theme park will have an amphitheatre, boating area, musical fountain plaza, walking pathways and children’s play area.
“The idea is to popularise the spot, enhance its tourism potential by providing wholesome entertainment for the entire family,” Mr. Jeevan Prasad said.

| Andhra to launch 'sea cruise liner' from Vizag to Andamans
Vikram V K
Hyderabad, Oct 1 (PTI) In a major tourism promotion initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government would be launching a sea cruise service in the picturesque waters from Visakhapatnam to the Andaman islands.
The 'sea cruise liner', the first of its kind to be started on the East Coast by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) promises an unforgettable and enchanting, yet economical, holiday experience for maritime lovers on the cruiser.
"We are buying a cruise ship accommodating 100 tourists and provide them with luxurious and comfortable travel. The 'sea cruise liner' will set sail in about next four to six months," APTDC Managing Director Jayesh Ranjan told PTI.
The state government has taken a in-principle decision on starting a cruise liner and hired the services of a private consultant to study all relevant details pertaining to the project and submit a report, he said.
"We are also studying a proposal of the cruise ship reaching Andamans via Chennai", he added.
"A traveller has to pay around Rs 1,300 per day for the week-long journey beginning from Vizag and the package includes sight-seeing at Andamans and bringing them back," Ranjan said.
There are several river cruise operators in the back waters of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh among some other states but APTDC will be the first government organisation to introduce the luxury 'sea cruise' service in the country, he said. PTI
