| You made my trek into memory lane...
I remember Vijaya Lakshmi transport bus going so close to the tree at KGH (on the way to AVN college) and killing a commuter hanging from foot board. In the same year ( 1975-76), I remember the same route bus, having tilted to one side with the height of overhanging passengers, rubbed against the Jail wall killing two passengers.
Do you remember the capsizing of boat taking workers across the dockyard (near venkatesara port temple) drowning dozen people.
I don't know how many people remember Visakhapatnam Railway Station close to old Post office (behind Lakshmi talkies).
Coming to your observation, I won't put it local vs non-local. The population of Vizag in 1973 was roughly 1 lakh. Now it is more than 20 lakhs. You cannot expect same ambience when the population increased 20 folds with so much commercial development.
The best comparison is how does it stand against cities of comparable size. Let me tell you that relatively Vizag still retained the same tranquility and peace. To some extent the beaches are more exhilarating now than before (not the RK beach though) and places like Kailasgiri, Thatla Konda, Rishi Konda provide same kind of uniqueness to Vizag as what RK beach (with concrete train, elephant statues) used to do some 35 years ago.
I guess it will take some time to adjust for you. Give some time and you will start appreciating current vizag as much as you did in the past. |

| Thanks Ved nd statesman.
Yes, I remember that boat incident . Infact often I used to take lunch to my dad in shipyard, walk/cycle from beach road via the two hills crossing three Religious shrines and travel by Launchy to cross the sea to go to shipyard. there used to be atleast 2 or 3 newly build ships a year and we were so excited to vist HSL and witness Launching of the ships . Those were my exciting childhood moments in life . I witnessed the jai Andhra agitation and CRPF camps on the hills of Medical college and curfew in visakhapatnam too . also blackout (half lit bulbs)sirens during war with pakistan . casino , cochin cafe , Naaz restaurant , some other hotel near kurpum market famous for sambar Idly , swagat and motimahal were the some of the hotels we used to visit then . |
