What happened to the central university in Vizag? We cannot believe any of their sensational pronouncements.

In this latest news, there is no mention of Central University in Vizag. Is it shelved? or is poor reporting?

Government creates 12 new central universities through ordinance - Jan 9, 2009

Quote:
New Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) The government will issue an ordinance to create 12 new central universities, it was announced here Friday.”This is being done because the bill to create the universities could not be passed in parliament (in the session that concluded last month),” Home Minister P. Chidambaram said here Friday.

He was briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The new universities will be established in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram said.

In addition, the Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya at Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, the Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and the Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University at Srinagar in Uttarakhand would be converted into central universities, the minister said.

These institutions currently function as state universities.

“The proposed ordinance would contain all the provisions of the Central Universities Bill, 2008 pending in the Lok Sabha, with such changes as may be necessary to implement the accepted recommendations of the parliamentary standing committee, which include, among others, dropping of the conversion of Goa University into a central university,” Chidambaram said.

The conversion of Goa University was included in the bill on a specific request of the state government.

“However, the state government subsequently said the issue had been discussed by the various segments of the society in the state and their elected representatives, including members of parliament, and they had come to the conclusion that conversion of Goa University would not be in the interest of the state,” the minister pointed out.

VISAKHAPATNAM: After the recent merger of city-based National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) with Indian Maritime University (IMU), an exercise has been launched to upgrade it from a regional campus of IMU into a separate university by acquiring at least 100 acres on city suburbs.

“If we get the suitable land from the AP Government, we are ready to upgrade NSDRC – our campus here – into a university on the lines of JNTU,” IMU Vice-Chancellor P. Vijayan told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Dr. Vijayan, who made his maiden visit to NSDRC to interact with the employees and enquire about availability of suitable land, clarified that due to the goodwill enjoyed by NSDRC by many as premier ship design and research centre, they had decided to retain the name of Visakhapatnam campus of IMU as NSDRC.

“As NSDRC is now located on an area of five acres at Gandhigram, we are interested in at least 100 acres to expand our activities. Our Visakhapatnam campus will start four-year B.Tech in naval architecture and shipbuilding and a four-month certificate course in maritime management for mariners with the support of IIM, Bangalore and Kozhikode,” he said.

IMU headquarters based at Chennai has already started B.Sc in nautical sciences and B.E in marine engineering. Besides Chennai and Visakhapatnam, the new university set up by an Act of Parliament vide gazette notification dated November 14, 2008 has campuses at Mumbai and Kolkata.

Dr. Vijayan said they had signed memorandum of understanding with University of Malta, Italy, University of Dwelft, Netherlands and International Maritime Law Institute for launching new courses and taking up research.

Maritime complex

The Centre has allotted 300 acres to IMU and construction of administrative block and other buildings for the university campus has started on an area of 106 acres at a cost of Rs.240 crores. The administrative block will be ready by next year.

A State-of-the art maritime complex will come up in 194 acres near Mahabalipuram at an estimated cost of Rs.1500 crores in three years under public-private participation mode. It will have maritime aquarium, art gallery, museum, Asia’s biggest convention centre with 15,000 seating capacity, a five star hotel and water sports. The complex will be completed in three years.

Strong plea for veterinary college in north Andhra

Special Correspondent

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Central committee has already recommended for such institution, says a forum

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VISAKHAPATNAM: The North Coastal Andhra Welfare and Development Forum has made a strong plea for establishment of a College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, keeping in mind specific problems of livestock, numbering more than 37 lakh and other animals in these parts.

A Central committee had already recommended setting up of such institution in north coastal districts, it was pointed out.

But the recommendation had never materialised for want of follow up efforts, specially by people’s representatives in these parts. Speaking to mediapersons on Monday, Forum’s president S. Gopala Sastry and secretary N.S.R. Sastry, a livestock specialist, said livestock production, rearing of milk animals, sheep, goat had been important income generating activities of small farmers in this region.

Farmers in these parts are not aware of modern methods of livestock management. Development would have to be guided by research for which a veterinary college was essential, they said.

At present the nearest veterinary college is located at about 500 km away from here. Visakhapatnam has one of the largest and oldest livestock farm, a stockman-training centre and semen station.

Ideal infrastructure

These form an ideal infrastructure base for starting a veterinary college here, they pointed out, urging all concerned, particularly people’s representatives to make efforts in this direction.
