Kambalakonda to get new look

VISAKHAPATNAM: Kambalakonda, a natural reserve forest of tourist interest, will soon get a new look with the state government giving a green signal for the construction of cottages worth Rs 86 lakh.

Proposals worth Rs 1.42 crore were sent to the government for the development of the reserve forest. Sources said three new cottages would be built, and the four existing ones would be modernised. These cottages would be fashioned after the Tyda cottages near Araku. A pagoda type tribal museum would be built at RK Beach at a cost of Rs 18 lakh.

A community building centre is also coming up at Anantagiri, a forest official said.

Orissa, WB and AP to sign MoU for cruise tourism
Cruise connectivity from Visakhapatnam to Kolkata

Three states- Orissa, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are likely to sign a MoU (memorandum of understanding) for introducing cruise connectivity from Visakhapatnam to Kolkata via Orissa coast to promote inter-state tourism.

“The talks are at an advanced stage as the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have shown interest for this mutually beneficial tourism project. We are trying to introduce the service before the end of the current year”, said RN Nanda, director (tourism) of the Orissa government.

The project would be implemented on the public-private partnership (PPP) mode and a private party would operate the cruise.

“The proposal will take a concrete shape after the signing of the MoU. The expression of interest (EoI) would be sought from the interested parties to operate the cruise”, he added.

If the proposal materializes, it will be the first inter-state cruise tourism project in the country.

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation is now operating a sea cruise for tourists for a shorter duration.

The inter-state sea cruise service to promote tourism is the brain child of Debi Prasad Mishra, the state’s tourism minister.

Mishra discussed about the proposed project with the tourism minister of Andhra Pradesh during his visit to Hyderabad earlier this month.

He has also talked to the tourism minister of West Bengal in this connection.

Under the project, the tourists will travel from Visakhapatnam to Kolkata on the sea route. These tourists would stay for a short duration at the famous tourist spots in Orissa.

The steamer carrying the tourist would offer all facilities including dining and bed. At least two steamers would operate under the project-onen from West Bengal and the other from Andhra Pradesh.

Claiming that Orissa would be benefited under this tourism project, the state tourism officials said they have already made the potential survey on the project. “While we have the infrastructure to anchor the vessel at Gopalpur-on-Sea and Dhamara, we have to develop such facilities at Puri and other nearby towns”, said an official. The proposed vessel will halt at Gopalpur-on-Sea, Puri, Dhamara and some other tourist spots

VISAKHAPATNAM: This winter, the sun kissed beaches of Vizag and the green capped valleys of Araku seem to be topping the travel charts of the tourists. The room bookings from December 28 to January 1 have already touched its peak and almost 90 per cent bookings are done from December 15 onwards at all the hotels and resorts of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) at Vizag and Araku.

Better infrastructure, green environs and clean stretch of beaches have attracted tourists from all parts of the country and even abroad to the region this year. The last tourist season from September to November witnessed a 10 per cent rise in tourist inflow as compared to the figures of last year during the same period. Taking Borra Caves as the benchmark, the number of tourist arrivals recorded during the season was 1.25 lakhs.

In its efforts to attract more tourists, APTDC has initiated several projects in the Araku valley. “The work for the tribal bazaar project near the tribal museum in Araku has already started and is expected to get over within a year’s time,” APTDC Divisional Manager S. Surya Prakasa Rao told The Hindu. The total budget for the project is Rs.1.5 crores and the bazaar will feature tribal handicrafts, an amphitheatre, musical fountain plaza, children’s play area and a boating zone.

The corporation has also taken up a project to develop road and other infrastructure facilities at the scenic Thatiguda Waterfalls at Anantagiri at a cost of Rs.57 lakhs. At its Anantagiri hill resorts, nine economy-type accommodations are coming up at a cost of Rs.40 lakhs. The rooms will be operational within a month, Mr. Rao said.

Botanical garden in Eastern Ghats

December 23rd, 2009
By Our Correspondent

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 22: The first botanical garden in the Eastern Ghats will come up near Thotlako-nda tourist spot as a joint venture of the Visakhapatn-am Port Trust (VPT) and the Visakhapatnam urban deve-lopment authority (Vuda) with a project cost of Rs 12 crore over 200 acres. Land will be provided by Vuda and of the total project cost, the Port Trust will bear Rs 10 crore and Vuda Rs 2 crore. The project is targeted to complete within five years, said the Vuda vice-chairman, Mr V.N. Vishnu.

He said that saplings of different rare fruits, flowers and medicinal plants available in the Eastern Ghats would be planted in the botanical garden. Mr Vishnu said the park will be the cynosure of the city and an expert committee has been appointed for this purpose.

A similar botanical garden, Blue Mountains, is in Ooty in the Western Ghats. The implementation of the project as been entrusted to the forest wing of Vuda.

State government had earlier declared Thotlakonda as a protected zone as there are some Buddhist relics there.

The Vuda vice-chairman said that they have allotted the 200 acres without touching the protected zone. He made it clear that project work would be taken up only after faculty members of the history department of Andhra University confirm that there are no Buddhist relics in the proposed area.
