Air travellers for more operating hours at airport
Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM: Welcoming the efforts to attract more connectivity from Visakhapatnam to more domestic and international destinations, members of Air Travellers’ Association (India) suggested that extending the operating hours at the airport till 10 p.m. might attract more late evening domestic flights but would not give the necessary boost to attract international flights, as majority of such flights land post midnight. The association would want the Indian Navy, under whose control the airport is at present, to operate without a break between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and open up between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Informing a few latest developments, president of the association D. Varada Reddy has said that Spice Jet Airlines is planning to reschedule its Delhi-Vizag flight. It is also planning to operate an early morning Chennai-Vizag and a late evening Vizag-Chennai flight. Similarly Vizag-Port Blair-Vizag and Vizag-Kolkata-Vizag flights are also in the radar of the company. He also said that Air India (Alliance Air) is planning to operate a mid morning Kolkata-Vizag flight and Paramount is working out an option to operate a late evening Chennai-Vizag-Chennai flight to connect passengers to international destinations at Chennai.
Flight for Singapore
According to him, representatives of Silk Air has recently visited the city and after meeting various industry heads, Anakapalle MP Sabbam Hari and Mayor P. Janardhana Rao, are working out an option to operate a flight to Singapore from the city. The Silk Air representatives suggested that a few facilities at the airport like operations post midnight, customs and immigration clearance facility and organising a few road shows and shopping festivals be taken up immediately to attract more international flights.
The association members also had a meeting with the railway authorities. Giving a brief of the meeting Mr. Reddy has said that the fully air-conditioned railway passenger reservation complex will be opened by February 2010 and facelift to the station will be completed by September 2009.

Even i saw, the baggage belt is in a very poor condition. This is the same belt which was used in the old airport and the number is only 1. Its very small, can only hold some 25 bags at a time. I am hearing the news from more than 5 years that some intl airlines going to operate and expect to hear the same for the next 5+ years. We can only hear some foolish promises made by our non local politicians like Puran. Now she has achived what she wanted to be (cabinet minister) and now least bothered and not caring for th people from where she got elected.

No airlines sought operation of flights beyond existing hours, says AAI

VISAKHAPATNAM: In response to a request of Araku MP V. Kishore Chandra Deo for grant of night landing facilities to commercial operators up to midnight at the Visakhapatnam Airport, Minister of Defence A.K. Antony informed that the Airport Authority of India, which was asked to indicate whether there was any such requirement, had stated that there was no requirement for 24 hours operation at the airport. The AAI further stated that no scheduled airlines had submitted any requests for operation of their flights from Visakhapatnam airport beyond the existing hours (that is beyond 10 p.m.).

The Minister also informed Mr. Deo that the Indian Navy, which controls air traffic, was in a position to provide extension of watch hours for operating flights late into the evening, and depending up on the requirement watch hours can be extended.
