DD Regional Kendra at Vijayawada

Uplink facility from Vijayawada Doordarshan Kendra

Vijayawada All India Radio is one of the oldest and biggest Kendras in South India. It was first AIR studio setup after post Independence which was served by many prominent film personalities and journalists in the past. The grand old British style iconic building stand with pride in the heart of the city on MG Road. This was established in 1948, later comes the studios at Hyd in 1971, VSKP in 1973 and TPTY in 1991. To commemorate the golden jubilee celebrations of the AIR kendra the then central government decided to start a regional Doordarshan studio at Vijayawada in AIR campus which has vast vacant land behind it. Doordarshan studio became reality in coastal Andhra by mid 1990s. Later two more DD regional centers were opened at Tirupati and Warangal in early 2000s. From then all these studios working as feeder stations to Hyderabad DD Kendra by recording and shooting the programs. A time slot on Tuesday's and Thursday's made available on DD Saptagiri channel to broadcast DD Vijayawada programs for an hour from early 2000s through Hyderabad DD kendra signal uplink facility. The demand for direct signal uplink facility from the Vijayawada studio has been pending from long time. State bifurcation once again compelled the need for having greater autonomy for Vijayawada DD. Agreeing to the fact Prasar Bharati agreed to to start daily terrestrial transmission from DD Vijayawada directly for 2 hours under DD Saptagiri channel by setting up a new regional center at Vijayawada. This will be an interim arrangement until new frequency and Channel has been allotted to residual Andhra Pradesh.

The government-owned Doordarshan is set for bifurcation with Telangana having its own channel by August. The existing ‘Saptagiri’ channel will be delegated to Andhra Pradesh, with Telangana getting a brand new channel.

According to sources, the Telangana officials of the Information and Broadcasting department have decided to name the new channel “Yadagiri”. The new channel is likely to hit small screen sometime in August. Meanwhile, the DD officials in Hyderabad have already prepared the list of staff to work in Telangana and AP from August. The officials have already asked the 25 staff of different categories to get ready to move by the first week of August. The AP channel – Saptagiri – would start its operations from Vijayawada, the sources added.

The Doordarshan has a small studio in Vijayawada behind the All India Radio which was established in the ’90s. The studio has equipment to design and telecast programmes. Though initially it had telecast some programmes, giving representation to this area, it was subsequently abandoned, with Hyderabad continuing to dominate. ... ted-100754 ... 4#page/4/2

Doordarshan Kendra in VIjayawada gets its bearings right

Vijayawada: Fortunes of Doordarshan Kendra, Vijayawada, which had been languishing in a state of neglect for decades for want of better infrastructure and staff, appear to be on the upswing.
Though this studio was set up on the demand of the people of the region, not much was done for its betterment. As a result, it left the locals, who hoped for better coverage of news, events and culture, deeply disappointed.

For decades, the Vijayawada DD studio continued to function as a transmitter of programmes produced by Hyderabad and Delhi DD studios. To retain the “studio” tag, it used to produce programmes of just half-an-hour duration per day.

However, bifurcation of the state has turned into a blessing in disguise for the Kendra, as well as the people who had pinned hopes on it.
After the division of the state, like many government institutions, Doordarshan was also split into two, Saptagiri for AP and Yadagiri for Telangana.

The Saptagiri channel was launched amidst much fanfare in Vijayawada studio premises on September 27, with people like Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu attending the function. They assured complete cooperation in developing the Vijayawada studio into a full-fledged Kendra, one that can produce quality programmes round the clock.
At that time this studio had less than 40 staff members and the infrastructure was also not adequate. However, within a span of just two months, it has seen dramatic changes, and is now cruising ahead by effective utilisation of manpower and infrastructure. The government’s budgetary allocations and emphasis helped this.
Now, the duration of programmes produced here has increased to 16.30 hours per day (from 6 am to 10.30 pm).

There are also plans for expansion of the studio, provision of better infrastructure, induction of staff and launching of novel programmes and game shows to reach more viewers, said the Kendra’s deputy director-general M. Sailaja Suman.

Ms Suman said that as per their policy of infotainment, the Kendra is producing more news bulletins, programmes on spiritual, tourism, health, legal, agriculture, dairy, serials and reality shows.
“Very soon we plan to launch ‘Mukhamukhi (phone in)’ with CM, ministers and higher officials,” she said.
