Bid for National games 2017 at Vijayawada

Now that government of AP officially submitted their bid for conducting national games at Vijayawada, its time to retrospect sporting facilities in and around Vijayawada. Though it is too early and too ambitious to say that Vijayawada will be given a chance to host these games, but given a chance this will change the sporting facilities in newly formed Andhra Pradesh. A sneak peek in to existing infrastructure.

Vijayawada has four outdoor stadiums and three indoor stadiums. Out of them

Indira Gandhi Municipal stadium is an International outdoor stadium. This stadium was built in 1969 which hosted several national and international games including cricket matches. Due to differences with Municipal corporation and Andhra Cricket Association there were no international cricket matches held after India Vs West Indies. ACA parted its way with Vijayawada corporation and decided to build new international stadium at Mangalagiri a town which is 10 Km from VJA and 24 KM from Guntur like how they parted with LB stadium and Indira Priyadarsini stadiums at Hyderabad and Vizag respectively. Even this stadium could be leased out during national games if ACA complete it by 2017.

Now VMC is converting Indira Gandhi stadium - IGM to multipurpose stadium by laying synthetic sprint tracks and for other out door sports. As per VMC these works are already in progress from an year and should be completed in time.

Dandamudi Raja Gopal Rao - DRR stadium Many badminton national and junior international events happened in this stadium. Last event was 2011 national badminton championship at this stadium. This stadium produced badminton players like P.V.V. Lakshmi, P.V. Sarada, Chetan Anand, Kiran Kumar, Vidyadhar, Prudhvi, Neelima Choudary, Radhika Reddy, Srilakshmi, Swetha and many others who represented India and in international major tournaments. This stadium needs slight refurbishment to be available for national games.

Gymkhana national swimming pool complex Several national senior and junior championships held at this stadium. But its been long time after 2007 it had hosted any major event. There is an immediate need to give face lift to the facilities at this complex.

Apart from above stadiums..

Makineni Basavapunnaiah outdoor stadium - This was relatively new stadium built at Vijayawada with a gallery strength of 15k. Now VMC is contemplating the idea of laying astro turf in the stadium to convert it in to full fledged hockey stadium. VMC is in process of finalizing tenders for the same.

Andhra Layola College grounds - This stadium has a decent gallery strength which was leased out to ACA to host several Ranji matches.

PB Siddhartha University grounds with decent gallery strength can be used for power athletics like shotput, Javelin throw etc etc.

Patamata Indoor stadium - This is relatively new sporting infrastructure at Vijayawada which has facilities for badminton and Table Tennis courts. VMC and Krishna district Olympic association is planning to use it for Table Tennis games. This stadium never hosted any major events there is an immediate need to lift the facilities available at this stadium.

VMC swimming pool complex - Gurunank Nagar - Last time during 2009 VMC commissioner made an announcement to upgrade existing facilities here to international level. Nothing has been heard after that.

What lags ?

Though there are enough sporting facilities for a city like Vijayawada, there is a need for multi purpose indoor stadium like "Swarna Bharati" Indoor stadium at Vizag. DRR indoor stadium has good reputation but facilities for other indoor sports apart from Badminton are sparse. Similarly a multi purpose outdoor stadium like "Gachibowli stadium" is also required. As hosting state will get an aid of Rs. 2000 Cr to invest in sporting infrastructure, VMC can plan either to convert existing stadiums or build new ones on war foot of international standards.

Many small cities to Vijayawada like Ranchi, Cuttak, Jabalpur, Patiala and Imphal hosted these games in past. I don't think this will be an uphill task for state government and VMC to host National games and bring pride to newly formed Andhra Pradesh. All the best for your bid !!
